Trench Decay: Melee Weapons and Shield Choices
Compare Aegis blocking with ordinary melee offense, plan around stamina, and distinguish modifiers that remove player or enemy guns.
Trench Decay melee choices are not all interchangeable. Aegis is a shield-first item that uses stamina to block damage, slows movement, and does not perform a heavy attack. Choose it for a defensive job rather than expecting the same offense as an ordinary melee weapon.
This related gameplay video provides context for the campaign and equipment decisions below.
Choose offense or blocking before the item
Decide what you want melee equipment to contribute. An ordinary close-range weapon and a shield-first choice solve different problems. Aegis gives you a reason to absorb pressure, while giving up the heavy attack you might expect from another melee item.
I would choose the shield when blocking supports the squad's next fight. If your plan is mainly aggressive close-range offense, its slower movement and different attack behavior deserve attention before you commit to it.
| Choice | Practical difference |
|---|---|
| Aegis | Blocking consumes stamina and changes your offensive options. |
| Movement-focused role | Class abilities remain separate from the item itself. |
| Cold Steel | Removes player firearm use. |
| Fix Bayonets | Removes enemy firearm use. |
Leave room for stamina and movement
Aegis redirects most incoming damage into stamina drain. When stamina empties, the shield temporarily breaks before recovering. Holding pressure indefinitely is therefore not a sound plan, even when the initial block looks successful.
Use the space around you instead of standing still until the resource disappears. Sapper's movement-oriented role and class movement perks are separate decisions from simply equipping a shield. A new melee item does not itself grant every movement option described in a class guide.
Respect modifiers that change firearm use
Cold Steel disables the player's firearms; Fix Bayonets disables enemy firearms. Those modifiers change different sides of a fight. Do not interpret either one as a universal rule that every participant is using the same melee-only setup.
If you choose a modifier that removes your guns, prepare for the close-range role you are committing to. A defensive shield can be helpful for a specific job, but it does not turn an unfamiliar melee route into the same experience as a rifle campaign.
Melee questions
Does Aegis have a normal heavy attack?
No. That is one of its important differences.
Can it block forever?
No. Its protection uses stamina and can temporarily break.
Where is the full shield explanation?
The Aegis guide develops its blocking and recovery trade-offs.
